Undergraduate Assistants
There’s nothing like experience! We’re convinced the most meaningful education requires full participation in authentic activities, with more experienced individuals guiding and supporting the work of junior partners. (Think about Vygotsky . . .) Undergraduate members of our lab initially work closely with graduate students within the context of an ongoing investigation. Through this activity, they learn some of the skills psychologists need, including collecting data, classifying responses, and interpreting findings. In addition, students’ participation in the enterprise of psychological research helps them formulate their plans for the future. As they gain experience, we encourage our undergraduates to develop their own projects, often exploring questions they generate through re-analysis of existing data. Their presentation of this work at conferences or symposia is a highlight of the academic year. See the alumni section for examples of the accomplishments of some former M&ND undergraduates.
